To Brush Or Not to Brush? Is That the Question?

To Brush Or Not to Brush? Is That the Question?

Periodontal disease is one of the most common diseases seen in dogs today, affecting 8 out of 10 dogs 3 years of age and older.

To Brush Or Not to Brush? Is That the Question?

To Brush Or Not to Brush? Is That the Question?

To Brush Or Not to Brush? Is That the Question?

To Brush Or Not to Brush? Is That the Question?

To Brush Or Not to Brush? Is That the Question?

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the tissues surrounding the teeth, gums and bone. If left untreated, periodontal disease will finally lead to periodontitis, bone loss, followed by the loosening of, and loss of teeth.

Worse yet, the vascular nature of the gums can allow secondary diseases to organize by allowing bacteria from the mouth to enter the blood stream. Once blood borne, these bacteria can make their way to the liver and kidneys. The bacteria then colonize in these organs and wreak havoc! Bacteria that reach the heart can cause vegetative endocarditis (infected heart valves). Not good!

The Main Cause of Canine Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is not something new, it's been observed in the domestic pet for the last 70 years, right about the time that market pet Foods entered the picture. Coincidence? fantasize the shape that your teeth would be in if you ate nothing but canned Spam, or Cheezies every day for the rest of your life And, let's say that you didn't own a tooth brush and had never heard of dental floss. A pretty scary plan eh?

Contrary to the marketing, soft market dog Foods (canned and kibble) do not clean teeth, in fact they stick to the dog's teeth feeding the bacteria in their mouths, contributing to and/or worsening existing periodontal disease.

Is it authentically any wonder that periodontal disease is so prevalent in dogs today, when every particular day of their lives they're being feed soft market dog Food?

To Brush or Not to Brush, Is That the Question?

From the time we're old enough to brush our own teeth, what two things does the dentist say? "Brush and floss your teeth everyday!" Flossing is a must to get below the gum line, but if you do one and not the other, in time the condition of your teeth will reflect that, and normally not in a good way.

Veterinarians propose that you brush your dog's teeth at least 3 times per week and that you also Massage her gums. Now, let's just fantasize for a moMent that it's authentically possible for you to get your dog to sit still long enough to brush his teeth, and do a good Job. Is he going to let you floss them after too? I know, yeah right! So much for cleaning below the gum line.

Mother Nature's Solution to Canine Dental Health

Archaeological records show less than 2% of wolves suffer from periodontal disease. The reason? The wolf's natural prey diet involves lots of crunching of bones that scrape and clean its teeth. The tearing and cutting of flesh and connective tissue acts like natural dental floss, cleaning in the middle of teeth and massaging gums.

"But my dog is not a wolf" you say? Well, authentically it is, at least in terms of what their teeth and digestive systems were designed for. Incidentally in 1993, the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) was reclassified and placed under the same genetic umbrella as Canis lupus, the Grey Wolf.

The best thing you can do for your dog's dental condition is to normally (ideally every day, but minimum 3 times per week) feed them nutritionally beneficial, size appropriate, raw meaty bones such as chicken & turkey wings, backs/necks. Their teeth, gums and jaw and mind will all get a authentically good workout.

Note:It's always a good idea to supervise dogs at mealtime.

One Small Glitch

Smaller dogs such as the toy breeds can still benefit from size acceptable raw meaty bones, but because of the closeness with which their teeth are situated in their mouths, they may still wish brushing and/or dental cleaning performed by a veterinarian.

Chews and Chew Toys

A few other ways to help keep your dog's teeth clean are through toys and chews. A good tug rope, and bully sticks are a integrate of good options. I'd stay away from most of the "dental chew" products out there, if you look at the ingredient panel on the packaging you'll understand why I say that. And what's with the ones that are shaped like a toothbrush?

My Dog Has an Itchy and Smelly Ear! Help!

My Dog Has an Itchy and Smelly Ear! Help!

If your dog has a smelly ear it's commonly accompanied by a tickly inflammation that makes him scratch it, shake his head and maybe hold his head to one side. Read on for free vet advice on how to give the necessary pet care whilst avoiding unnecessary vet fees.

My Dog Has an Itchy and Smelly Ear! Help!

My Dog Has an Itchy and Smelly Ear! Help!

What causes it?

Well, most of it is down to us. It's our fault because of the way we took the basic wolf-type dog and then, straight through breeding, started to tweak things - adding a bit here, taking a bit off there, shortening this, lengthening that.

Just think of the wolf - erect ears actively piquant nearby to pick up sounds, no loose skin folds, an outdoor life with fresh Air circulating nearby and straight through a medium-length springy coat, and grooming other pack members ensuring body areas inaccessible to individuals are kept clean. Now think of many of our modern breeds foremost a modern life - heavy folded-down ears, long hAir, skin folds, a mostly sedentary life in a warm house commonly with no other dogs. With all this going on, our dogs' ears are a astonishing site for all sorts of things to set up camp - bacteria, yeasts and parasites being top of the list. And once they've found a home they start causing irritation which causes more ear wax to be produced which makes it Party time for still more bacteria, yeasts and parasites.

Anatomically, dogs' ears (like ours) are divided into three distinct parts: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Given that problems tend to come from the outside, not surprisingly it's the outer ear (which extends in as far as the ear-drum) which is most often affected. commonly the ear drum stays intact and the bugs and mess is kept on the surface - this is fortunate because it allows effective rehabilitation from the surface too.

Occasionally infection becomes established in the middle ear where the mechanical components responsible for transmitting sound to the inner ear reside. This commonly happens because the ear drum has ruptured but it can also happen in the absence of an outer ear problem - if infection travels in the blood stream or up the Eustachian tube which links the middle ear to the throat. Infection here tends to cause more pain than irritation and also interferes more with hearing. Infections of the inner ear, which is where the equilibrium organs and the cochlea (which converts sound waves into nerve impulses) reside, are fortunately quite rare. It's fortunate because damage here can be permanent and disabling, and because problems such as infection here are too close to the brain for comfort.

Having said most problems are basically our fault, for breeding all shapes and sizes of dogs, nature is also partly to blame - but for excusable reasons. For ears to work well sounds are best gathered from high up - so each ear flap (the 'pinna') is placed to draw down sound from the top off the head, channelling sound down to the middle ear within the skull. This 'channel' is a vertical tube which turns to become horizontal before ending in the ear drum. Vertical tubes open at the top and complete at the bottom aren't the cleverest of shapes for allowing wax, dirt and any foreign bodies to certainly escape. In this respect dogs' ears are quite unlike ours - we have only short horizontal tubes between pinna and ear drum so we don't have the same difficulties with dirt and wax construction up.

Coming back to inflammation in the outer ear, 'otitis externa' as it's called, it's clear that ventilation, or lack of it, and poor natural drainage is a big problem for many dogs. This becomes even more of a problem once inflammation gets hold because it causes the skin lining the ear canal to swell, and also to yield more wax and that in turn cuts down ventilation still further. Repeated bouts of otitis externa keep adding to the problem by causing lasting skin thickening. All this goes to emphasise the need to act swiftly to try to clear up infection Fast.

The parasites sometimes connected with ear infections are ear mites. These are only just graphic to the naked eye and can sometimes be seen piquant nearby on the waxy discharge removed from affected ears.

An occasional cause of ear problems is grass awns becoming stuck in the ear after a dog goes for a walk snuffling straight through long grass or undergrowth. These awns are shaped in such a way that they can certainly go down the ear canal but won't come back out unless physically removed - this is a Job for your vet as it involves introducing pliers deep into the ear canal.

What can I do to help?

Your role is to keep on top of things for the future - for now, and for the immediate needs of your dog, you need to see your vet if there's smell, inflammation and itching. Once your vet has given the designate medicines necessary to sort out the probable otitis externa, and you've applied them effectively, the best thing you can do to preclude recurrence is to keep your dog's ear clear of wax and dirt. You can get many effective ear cleaners for dogs without the need for a vet's prescription.

When should I call my vet?

Ear problems need to be dealt with correctly to give the best chance for a quick and effective cure. Your vet will observe your dog's ears with an auriscope to help arrive at a good analysis and settle upon treatMent. You should take your dog to see your vet for any new ear problem that emerges, but once the immediate problem has been solved, and having discussed it with your vet, you may be able to deal with any mild recurrences yourself, and you'll certainly be able to lead to your pet's wellbeing by holding his ears clean with wax-dissolving ear cleaners available without prescription.

Ears cause dogs more problems than ours cause us, so make sure you help your pet deal with this by adopting a disposition of holding them salutary - remember the wolf's grooming of its pack mates, holding clean those things like ears that an private can't keep clean itself. Underneath it all, your dog is just like a wolf - and so must you be!

Use each word as a prompt to an endless amount of potential questions. It so simple, you can truly stand at the board and start creating. Ask yourself, what questions, that start with each key word, are possible? If you generate two questions for each key question, then you have a twelve examine test. If you generate five questions for each key question, then you have a thirty examine test. Remember questions that are open-ended (have many potential answers) require the most thinking from your students.

The questions below are examples of what can be created.
I have used "The Three wee Pigs" as the example story because it is universally known.
Of course, the questions can be used successfully on a much more involved story.

Who?
Who are the main characters in the story?
Who left home?
Who built the house of straw?
Who built the house of sticks?
Who built the house of bricks?
Who let his two brothers live with him?
Who were the Three wee Pigs afraid of?
Who would be worried about the Three wee Pigs?
Who builds our houses?

What?
What was the first house built of?
What was the second house built of?
What was the third house built of?
What did the Wolf want?
What did the Three wee Pigs want?
What did the Three wee Pig's mother want?
What did the Three wee Pig's neighbors think of what was happening?
What else could the Three wee Pigs have done to protect themselves?
What were The Three wee Pigs thinking when the Wolf was at the door?
What would you have done if you were one of the pigs?
What would you do if you were walking past a house and saw the Big Bad Wolf trying to blow it down?
What would you build your house out of (if you were able to build a house)?
What did the Wolf say each time he was about to blow a house down?
What would have happened if the Third wee Pig hadn't complete his brick house before the Wolf arrived?
What are our houses made of?

Where?
Where is the story of The Three wee Pigs set?
Where was the Three wee Pigs mother when all of this was happening?
Where were the police when all of this was happening?
Where did the Three wee Pigs build their houses?
Where would you build a house?
Where did the Big Bad Wolf come from?
Where did the Three wee Pigs live before they built their houses?

When?
When did all of this take place?
When did the Three wee Pigs leave home?
When did the Big Bad Wolf arrive?
When did the First wee Pig move in with the Second wee Pig?
When did the Second wee Pig move in with the Third wee Pig?
When will you be old sufficient to build a house?

Why?
Why did the Three wee Pigs leave home?
Why did they each build there own house instead of one together.
Why did the Big Bad Wolf pick the Three wee Pigs to pick on?
Why did the house of straw fall down?
Why did the house of sticks fall down?
Why did the house of bricks stay standing?
Why did the Three wee Pigs stay in their houses instead of running away?

How?
How do you think the Three wee Pigs learnt to build houses?
How did the Three wee Pigs get rid of the Big Bad Wolf?
How many dissimilar endings to this story have you heard of?
How else could it end?
How would you like it to end?
How would you get rid of a Wolf at the door?
How could you convert the story to make it have a sad ending?
How is this story similar to Cinderella?
How is this story dissimilar from Cinderella?
How potential is it for a pig to truly build a house?
How potential is it for a wolf to truly blow a house down?

That's more than fifty questions I can pick from. You can use the same method to generate your own free reading insight tests.

Alaskan Wolves

Alaskan Wolves

Wolves love each other's company; they are collective animals, which live in packs or house groups. Each pack has the parent wolves, their pups, which were born within a year or the old year and ccasionally, a wolf house will let a stray wolf join their pack. The leader of the pack makes this decision, which is one of the parents. The parents of the pack are called the alpha pAir and if one dies, the other wolf will find other mate that's not from its pack. A general pack does not contain many wolves, on median there are seven wolves in a group. Sometimes packs are larger, a bigger group contains 20 or more wolves because one female may have 2 to 3 litters of pups.

Alaskan Wolves

Normally, male adult wolves weigh 85 - 115 pounds but they can weigh up to 145 pounds. Females however are 5 to 10 pounds lighter, rarely weighing over100 pounds; all wolves come to be adult size in about a year.

Wolves like to hunt big animals; they are carnivores and when they hunt in the north, caribou are their prey. In the southeast wolves hunt the Sitka black-tail deer and throughout the states they hunt moose. One wolf cannot bring down a large animal; the enTire pack helps by working together. Large animals are not the only source of Food for wolves; they suppleMent their diet with voles, lemmings, ground squirrels, Snowshoe hares and other small mammals. They also eat carrion and whenever they are near a source of water, they will catch salmon. Food gives wolves energy; they need at least seven pounds of meat a day to stay strong.

When wolves are not hunting, they defend their territory from other wolves, which may try to take their home. The area which contains prey or food Supplies changes, which means a pack will not stay within a territory for a long time. Many deer roam on the islands in Southeast Alaska, however a wolf's territory is smaller there, but in Interior and Arctic Alaska, the quantity of prey is lower but the area has larger wolf territories. Wolves are not lazy, they can travel 20 miles in a day and sometimes even farther. Wolves may quest and travel hundreds of mile from their home to find new territory to own.

February and March are the general months that wolves breed; in April or May, wolves have an median of five pups. At 22 months, a wolf can start breeding; its pups are born in a den, which is dug in soil that is drained. Some wolves have their pups in a tree and will take them to the den later. Parent wolves focus all their activities on their pups when they are young; the adult wolves all the time travel to find food and then carry what they find back to the den. while the midsummer, pups are weaned, then, when winter arrives, parents lead their pups away from the den.

Alaskan wolves are excellent hunters, live in packs and raise their families in groups.

Monster High Halloween Costumes

Monster High Halloween Costumes

The popular characters Frankie Stein, Lagoona Blue, Clawdeen Wolf, and Draculaura make fabulous Halloween costumes for girls ages 8-14. These characters are based on the novel, Monster High, by Lisi Harrison. Each one of these R.A.D's are the daughter of some kind of monster.

These girls try to fit in with the 'normies' at school, which makes things super easy to originate a Halloween Costume. Each girl has her own trademarks, so you can plainly add those to your daughter's normal Clothing to originate a costume.

Frankie Stein is the daughter of Frankenstein. To originate this costume you will need some green face paint, neck bolts, and black & blonde striped hAir. For the hAir you can use a wig, or temporary colored hAir spray. The green face paint can be made with cold cream if you can't find it in stores. The neck bolts are best purchased at a Halloween specialty store. Using face makeup you can then pencil on the characteristic 'stitches' Frankie has on her face, Wrists, and legs.

Lagoona Blue is the daughter of the Sea Monster. This costume is the most difficult to recreate. First you will need an extra long wavy blonde wig. A swimsuit can be used for Clothing. You can add large sequins to the clothing to characterize her characteristic scales.

Clawdeen Wolf's father is a Werewolf. This is a very fun costume to wear. Clawdeen has pierced wolf ears that can admittedly be recreated using a generic dog ear headband and add your own earrings to it. A fur collared jacket is other trademark of hers.

Draculaura's dad is Dracula. Probably the easiest Monster High costume to recreate. She has pink stripes in her hAir which can be recreated with temporary colored hair spray or pink hair extensions. Her face is pale with a slight red tattoo on the cheek. You can use face paint for both of those characteristics. Add a cute cape to her costume and you are set.
