Capturing the wolfs spirit on Canvas

The wolf in wild, in spirit and demeanor. This is where some artists go wrong. They try to draw or paint the wolf as if it were a dog. From wolf to dog, we have the transition that man has made. Our own breed of the dog - descendant of the wolf. That's where it ends.

If you want to draw the wolf to its greatest best, you need to get into a mindset of the wolf and all that it stands for. Once you have gained this. Then, and only then you start with your task of your wolf.

Wolves stand differently than a dog, their whole body is lower in stance than the dog. So when you grab your pencil, ready to draw your wolf. Whether it be as a drawing, or the sketch for a painting. You need to shape the standing frame of the wolf firstly. Once you have done this, refer to pictures of wolves and also have a look at some pictures of dogs. And then rule that you have captured the demeanor of the wolf before you go any further. If you have not, then go back to quadrilateral one and re-draw the wolf until you are happy with it. If you can do this..... You have made a very prominent step forward to your completion of your wolf art. One step ahead of many other artists out there.

On how to draw a wolf, you also need to think their moveMents. If you are not customary with the movement of the wolf. Then take a look at some nature programs of the wolf, or the easiest way these days, is to go and have a look a U-tube. I am sure you will find many short videos of the wolf in motion there.

The wolf lives in packs, so they are prone to having many different postures in the pack. As a dominant animal in the pack, there are also many less dominant, and their body language shows a submissive; even cowering stance. Have you concept when you draw your wolf, will they be dominant or submissive, when drawing more than wolf in your pictures. I bet not many of you have taken the time to think this very much.

Well this is something you need to think when drawing more than one wolf in your picture. Who will be dominant and who will be submissive?. Because you need to get the body language of each private wolf right from the start. Pick the hierarchy of your wolves firstly. The dominant will stand over the less dominant, the more submissive will stand lower than the more dominant wolf, retention their heads and tails lower.

Wolf Individuality

Again, we need to think when drawing the wolf, that each wolf will be an individual, not only will their position in the pack rule their body language. You will also need to think the less dominant will have looks on their faces that also will express their willingness to please.

The dominant will have harder look in their eyes and their bodies will stand tall. Every wolf will be of slightly a different character, you need to bring this out. Individuality! the key to private features of the wolves face. Body shape will also differ. And if times are hard, the leaner the wolf. If at the height of the season, you have fitter finding wolves. Their longish shaggy fur will be in great condition. Not dull and matted to depict poor condition.

I see how budding artists want to learn how to make the wolf realistic in art after all...you want your art work to be your own pride and joy, you want it to capture the true wolf. In some of these techniques I have shared with you here, you are well on the way to achieving the realistic wolf.

Currently there is controversy and turn over going on in dog training circles. One side represented by Cesar Milan promotes the theory of dogs as wolves and promotes dominance training by pet owners and states there are only leaders and followers in a relationship. There is dominance or submission, no partnering. Cesar's way is a one size fits all coming to dog training. On his Tv agenda on the National Geographic channel Cesar uses techniques difficult for owners to replicate and uses techniques that could effect in injury to the owner or their dog. That is why National Geographic has a disclaimer that runs at the lowest of the screen warning, "Don't try this at home". Writer Mark Derr whose articles have appeared in Audubon, Natural History, Atlantic Monthly, and other publications and who is the author of critically acclaimed books like Frontiersman and Dog's Best Friend writes that Cesar's ethology is outdated. He further states, "he is a charming one man wrecking ball directed at 40 years of advance in the comprehension and shaping dog behavior and in developing non-punitive, reward based training programs, which have led to finding the dog as an individual, to understand what motivates it, what frightens it, and what its talents and limitations are". Many dog training experts are alarmed that Cesar Milan has come to be the face of dog training and are shaken by the fact that he has taken the world of dog behavior by storm. More and more implicated dog professionals are becoming increasingly vocal in expressing their disagreeMent with Cesar's methods.

If this is the case then how do you ensure you receive more of the things you want and less of the things you don't want? Maybe the story of the two wolves will help. A friend recently sent this to me. I think the message is very timely and insightful.

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside all people. He said, 'My son, the battle is in the middle of two 'wolves' inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentMent, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.' The grandson understanding about it for a puny and then asked his grandfather: 'Which wolf wins?'The old Cherokee plainly replied, 'The one you feed.'

Tale of the Two Wolves

We had arrived at our encampMent and proceeded to set up our tent. It took longer then normal to setup as we were a exiguous rust at this skill but we ultimately got it ready for occupancy. Our next task was to get our firewood to keep warm and to cook with that evening. We scouted the immediate area grabbing as much of the fallen wood as we could and brought it back to our camp.

We finally felt we were about ready to reTire for the evening. We had a big day planned for tomorrow which included Fishing and possibly wandering around in the woods to peruse the old cities we were told existed there.

The Wolves

We made our camp fire and were conference around it to roast a few wieners when an old man appeared out of the wooded thicket. We all Watched in amazeMent as the elderly man approached our camp fire.

Tale of the Two Wolves

"Hello", he said in a quivering voice as he approached us. "It is a cool evening, is it not?" he questioned.

We finally composed our senses and invited the stranger to sit among us at the campfire.

He was at least in his late seventies and was Dressed in frontier style leather Clothing. His facial appearance resembled that of possibly a Native American. He moved rather gently when he moved and carried a long wooden staff to withhold his weight while walking.

He sat down and explained to us that his name was Weatherfield and his tribe had lived and hunted in the area for hundreds of years. Straight through his talks we discovered that he was a member of the Cherokee tribe. He obviously enjoyed talking for he linked many tales of his juvenile exploits the enTire evening. The one tale he told us was particularly impressive to me and that is the one I would like to tell to you now. He called it the tale of the two wolves.

Weatherfield told us that "A great battle is continually taking place within each of us. This raging battle is in the middle of two wolves that live inside our bodies and souls."

The old Cherokee man continued, "One of these wolves is Evil. It spills over with anger, jealousy, envy, sorrow, greed, regret, arrogance, guilt, self pity, resentMent, lies, inferiority, false pride, eco and superiority over his fellow braves."

We all sat in amazeMent as weatherfield prolonged to tell his tale. It was silent all within the woods except for his voice. He then prolonged his account.

"The other wolf is good. It is embodied with joy, love, peace, hope, humility, serenity, kindness, empathy, benevolence, forgiveness, truth, generosity , faith and compassion.'

Well the Gray Wolves are at it again attacking and harassing honest businessMen and snooping nearby where they do not belong. It seems they always think they smell a target this time of year. This year they are attacking and killing livestock in South Western "Big Sky" Country Montana. The ranchers are getting sick of them and have advanced a don't ask don't tell policy. Basically it goes like this; "shoot them, shovel them and shut up!"

Luckily this time they are getting some assistance from Federal Wildlife Managers who have killed nine in just over a 30-day time span. Some animal proprietary activists are upset and say they should not be killed. But Ranchers point to the cattle, which have been killed, dogs have been attacked which were guarding a flock of sheep and some sheep later in the month. The animal proprietary population do not care about those animals said one rancher.

Gray wolves are a serious threat to ranchers and all Americans and they must be killed when they trample on the proprietary of Americans and plot their dirty deeds. The Montana Stock Growers relationship and American Beef relationship are concerned that these animal proprietary activists do not understand that they are protecting their animals too and a dead cow would cost a rancher some 0 and that just is not funny. The Differences and Similarities between Dogs and Wolves

Domestic dogs exhibit a number of predispositions and behaviors that were inherited from wolves. A dog's highly advanced collective cognition is found only in primitive forms of grey wild wolves. Since the starting of time dogs have been tested and observed, and it is pretty clear that dog behavior is directly affected by both genetic and environMental factors.

When it comes to bodily characteristics dogs and wolves are just as alike as they are different. Compared with a wolf of the same size, dogs ordinarily have 20% smaller skulls and a 30% smaller brain. Dogs also have proportionally smaller teeth and they require a lower calorie count to function then wolves do. Typically the skin of a dog is quite thicker than that of a wolf. Dog paws are 50% smaller than the paws of wolves and their tails tend to curve upwards, which is not a trait in any species of wolves.

Unlike wolves, dogs achieve poorly when it comes to observational studying but they are very responsive when it comes to instruMental conditioning. That means they are more apt to retort when they know there will be some kind of reinforceMent and they can sense that punishMent will be the consequence if they chose a positive behavior. Dogs are more likely to be determined a scavenger, with other dogs acting as their competition. This is one of the main differences. Wolves hunt for Food together, they strike their prey together, and the feast on corpses together. A dog will fight with someone else dog when it comes to a dead bird.

The Differences and Similarities between Dogs and Wolves

When it comes to training, wolves and dogs retort in different ways. Generally, dogs are more responsive to coercive techniques. This is especially true when it involves aversive stimuli, fear, and force. Wolves are more responsive to positive conditioning and rewards. Dogs tend to retort more to the voice while a tame wolf responds better to hand signals. Though it is quite positive that dogs are easier to operate than wolves, a dog can still be comparatively difficult to teach than a wolf that is motivated enough.

Wolf Species

The largest member of the wolf house is the gray (or grey) wolf (Canis Lupus), also known as the Timber Wolf. It originated in Asia, later to Europe and North America, and probably shared a common ancestor with the domestic dog.

The grey wolf now inhabits only a small measure of its old range over Europe, Asia and North America, because so much of its habitat has been destroyed and because it has been specifically exterminated by humans. Wolves have begun to be re-introduced back into some of their old habitats, and the gray wolf is not thought about close to extinction.

Irene Nemirovsky - The Dogs and the Wolves

Irène Némirovsky, the daughter of a Jewish banker, was born in Kiev in 1903. Her house fled the Russian Empire following the start of the Russian Revolution in 1917 and finally they located in Paris where her father rebuilt his fortune. These wolves came to be at the sanctuary as descendants of a captive pack dating back to 1977.

The wolves came from photographer Jim Wuepper. He bought and raised two wolf cubs which ultimately grew into a small pack. Not being able to take care of them any longer, the pack was transferred to Haliburton Forest in 1992, where their descendants have lived on in a natural environMent.

Even during the cold Canadian Winters the sanctuary is alive and well. It is a magical feel to see the wolves play and roll in the Snow with their thick winter coats holding them warm. The building is placed at a place on the withhold that achieves optimal sunlight. The wolves are drawn to here and while seeing them is not guaranteed, there is a good opening since this is their popular spot. The wolves won't see you but you will be able to hear them straight through Speakers and they can probably sense your presence.

Every few days the wolves are fed and you can Watch this from the platform as well. See the staff bring out beaver or deer for the wolves to feast upon. The animals are road kill or brought in by local hunters and never fear, they are not fed live animals. However, the wolves tear them apart as if they were fresh kill.

The wolf centre works as an schooling centre as well, and you can learn a great deal about the workings of a wolf pack just by observing. The Alpha male is the largest and strongest wolf in the pack. Its coat is healthy and shiny and along with the Alpha female they are in charge. The Alpha eats first followed by the Alpha female and the Beta Male. The Beta male is the second strongest male wolf and it is tight with both the Alpha Male and female. The rest of the wolves fill out the clan to the bottom of the pack; the Omega. This poor wolf is the weakest and suffers the most. It is the last to eat, it is picked on by the other wolves and it is left to itself living a lonely sad life.

The wolves are left to live their lives without human interference, so the centre does not intervene to save the omega wolf. ultimately the wolf will be too weak to continue and may go off by itself to die. The cycle of the pack changes over time and soon a male will challenge the Alpha male taking over the lead position. The same thing will happen with the Alpha female and soon an unlucky weak wolf will take over the position of Omega.

Visiting the wolf centre in Haliburton is an important step in helping habitancy to understand the wolf. For centuries the human race has feared the wolf and unapologetically hunted it almost to extinction. Wolves are not the evil creature that we have been led to believe. They are more afraid of humans and are more likely to flee than attack and there has in effect never been a confirmed description of a healthy wolf attacking a human. The only cases of wolf attacks have come from whether rabid wolves or a wolf/dog mixed race. Truthfully there have been more dog attacks than wolf attacks.
